︎︎︎ 1000 Taiwan Dollar banknote
In the 1,000 New Taiwan Dollar banknote, four children are depicted looking at a globe. A closer look, however, reveals two more kids, hidden in the design. It appears as though they are all playing a game of hide-and-seek on the serious face of a banknote.
This artistic project explores how this game of hide-and-seek is animated and what it animates. My work is skeptical of cultural narratives that were established after World War II, a time when culture became a political tool rather than a reflection of economic numbers.
I find that childishness, spirituality, and historical narrative are elements that relate to and animate one another. Culture, as a concept, may need a moment of stillness to finally find its true definition and, in doing so, become practical. This is my hope, and it is the central question I am curious to explore.
